How to Re-Motivate Yourself to Run

If your relationship with running is on the rocks because you haven’t had the time or motivation to run lately, there’s still hope for you. Although getting re-motivated to start running regularly again can be difficult, if you really want to do it, you will find a way. Here are some tips to help you get yourself motivated again so you can get out and run again.

Start Small

If you’ve been spending the last few months chilling on the couch, keep in mind that you will not be able to simply pick up where you left off. Instead, start with small goals that are easily achievable like running 3 to 4 miles a week. Once you’ve reached your first goal for several weeks, set higher goals for the next few weeks and keep moving up as you accomplish your goals.

Think Big

While you should start small, thinking big and making future plans is important to keep yourself moving for the long term. One great way to do this is by signing up for a race. By investing in the entry fees, and having a date for which you need to be prepared, it will be easier for you to continue setting goals and running regularly to reach your end goal.

Musical Motivation

Having music playing while running is a great way to keep yourself moving. And, if you create a playlist filled with some of your favorite new songs that you only allow yourself to listen to while you are running, you will feel even more motivated to get out there and run while you enjoy your favorite tunes.

Ignore the voices – My greatest bit of advice for you is to shut up and run. Shutting up and running means that you stop buying into all of your excuses and playing the victim. If you have a body that can move, then you are luckier than thousands of other people. The moment you engage your brain and listen to why you shouldn’t go for a run, you might start to believe it.

Go to Netflix – Movies can motivate. Seeing and learning about someone else’s story and how they persevered is relatable. Use the energy and inspiration from those who have worked hard for their goals. Spirit of the Marathon is a favorite of mine because it highlights the elites, but also us normal Joes and Josephines.

Outfit yourself – Sometimes having something new to wear gives you that extra boost. If buying a cute new running skirt is going to get and keep you out the door, do it. You don’t have to break the bank on this one. Get creative! Look for coupons or promo codes. Go to consignment shops or try TJ Maxx and Marshalls for great deals on brand names.
